runaways

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe has continued its expansion on to the airwaves, we’ve seen it go in a number of different directions. From the procedural spy show style of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ to the social commentary that’s baked into ‘Luke Cage‘, each new series has had its own flavor. Of the various shows that have joined the lineup to date, the most offbeat of the bunch has arguably been ‘Runaways’.

The series, which debuted back in November, is based on the seminal and often subversive Brian K. Vaughan comic of the same name. It follows a group of Los Angeles teenagers who discover that their parents are in fact supervillains. Since its debut, the show has met with critical acclaim and a strong fan response, thanks in part to its handling of the comic’s cast but also for the often unexpected ways in which it deviates from the source material.

As the season draws to a close, however, the narrative cliffhangers threaten the be overwhelmed by the real-world suspense of whether or not the show will, in fact, go on. The early word is positive, though, as according to ReviewCancelTV, ‘Runaways’ has been renewed for a second season. Though this isn’t an official announcement from either Marvel or Hulu, the website bills the news as a leak. No specific premiere date is provided for the second season, but the report claims that it will premiere late this year, likely around the same time the first did.

‘Runaways’ streams on Hulu, where the first season finale is due to be released on January 9, 2018. The show stars Rhenzy Feliz, Lyirca Okano, Virginia Gardner, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, Allegra Acosta, James Marsters, Ryan Sands, Annie Wersching, Brittany Ishibashi, and Kevin Weisman.
