We’ve been getting teases of the upcoming return of the original Jean Grey in the recent couple of issues named after the character which has had a focus on the time-stranded younger version and now we’ve learned a bit more. It isn’t clear if the current return of the Phoenix after Thanos banished it from his son will be what brings our Jean back to life but we do know that when she returns a new ‘X-Men: Red’ team will quickly be born.
The book has Tom Taylor penning the story with Mahmud Asrar on art and early previews have me interested. While I’m worried that this could blow up in our faces, I’m eager to see Jean Grey back in action. We’ve already seen her not thrilled with Emma Frost in the most recent two issues now that Scott Summers is dead, but when the reality of Cyclops being gone kicks in, it wouldn’t surprise me to see these two telepaths go up against one another again.
One thing Taylor isn’t going to skip is that the original Jean hasn’t been around in years. Technology in the real world has grown by leaps and bounds and what is possible in the 616 version of Earth puts our own innovation to shame. As he puts it:
“Jean’s been gone a long time. When I set out to write this, I thought about what that would actually mean, showing up in this time and place. The world has changed so much. The advances in technology, the impacts of social media, the political, racial, and social division. Jean is stepping into it for the first time, as an incredibly powerful telepath, and someone who’s uniquely empathetic. What does this world feel like to someone like her? It feels afraid and angry. And Jean, being Jean, with the added burden of what she’s been part of as the Phoenix, she wants to do what all true heroes want to do. She wants to help. She wants to make the world a better place.”
Helping isn’t something an X-Men tends to do by themselves unless they are Wolverine so Jean will need a team which we’re already learned will include “Nightcrawler, Gambit, Namor, and “Wolverine” Laura Kinney” as well as a few other new names.
With Jean returning, that is big enough alone, but it sounds like something even larger brings this team together:
“I don’t want to spoil it, but part of this team comes together in the middle of something big as will be seen in issue #1. But they don’t all come together at once. There will be more members later down the line, as Jean needs them, or as they need her.”
It won’t be clear who the villain is right off the bat which seems to be a trend in recent years for the X-Men, but we should “prepare for some shocks” as we learn the truth about whatever this mysterious event actually is.
Also joining the team are Trinary who is “a young mutant from India, and a powerful technopath” as well as Gentle from Wakanda who “will have a very big part to play” as he is “a little underused” and “could potentially be as strong as the Hulk.”
As for the new look that we see Jean sporting? According to Asrar:
“There is a reason why the team is wearing new costumes, but I guess that should reveal itself in the story.”
You tease! I can’t wait to see what it is because everything about the return of the original Jean Grey from how it will happen, to why it is happening, to what she is doing with her new life has me intrigued.
