guardians of the galaxy 2

One of the best parts of the superhero genre is how many different levels of entertainment can be found within, as a casual viewers can enjoy the spectacle, the humor, and the action, while those who grew up reading comic books with these heroes can also revel in the nostalgia factor, and enjoy seeing their favorite heroes brought to life up on the big screen. And for those who have spent their lives reading comics and know every detail of the worlds these heroes inhabit inside and out, there’s yet another level of enjoyment where they can inspect every frame of the film and spot inside jokes, references to the source material, and Easter eggs put there knowing that only those that really know the comics would be able to spot and appreciate those details. Of course, Easter eggs are not solely found within the realm of superhero films, but they work so well in this genre as there are decades of comics to pull from, and directors know these are exactly the type of fans that will take the time to painstakingly examine every frame to be sure they spotted and appreciated every one of those hidden gems.

Which is why ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ director James Gunn and his team took the time to include so many easter eggs in the first film, especially since the ‘Guardians’ were already an obscure enough comic, they knew they could put in dozens and dozens of more obscure references and their true fanbase would eat it up. And now, according to a conversation Gunn people are indeed still hunting down that final Easter egg from the original ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ and the director and his team have many, many more planned for the sequel:

“Oh my God. Our Easter egg obsession is insane. And in fact I have the dumbest Easter egg. We have so many incredibly obscure Easter eggs in this movie that it’s ridiculous. Yeah, we’ve been working hard on the Easter eggs. I feel this need to do it now since people have been pouring over stuff so much.”

While it’s true that the point of a movie should not be to stuff it full with so many inside references that fans can never find them all, one cannot help but appreciate the time that Gunn and company put into these films, and the dedication they have to their fans. Here’s hoping that all of the hard work pays off for them when ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ hits theaters this Summer!
