runaways

The mythology of the Marvel Universe spreads far and wide. It’s filled with decades worth of memorable stories and iconic characters. Although when it comes to its cinematic counterpart, there are still plenty of heroes, villains, and everything else in between that True Believers have yet to meet. And while we’re set to meet a number of young heroes in the upcoming Hulu series ‘Runaways’, we won’t exactly be meeting the whole team right away.

When ‘Gossip Girl’ creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage were tapped to adapt Brian K. Vaughn and Adrian Alphona’s award-winning comic series for Hulu’s corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they decided to start at the beginning of the group’s story where Alex Wilder, Nico Minoru, Karolina Dean, Gert Yorkes, Chase Stein, and Molly Hayes (who is now Molly Hernandez for the show) learn that their parents are really a collective of supervillains known as The Pride. But will their story extend to the point where the team will grow to include new recruits with a history with the young heroes such as vampire Topher, shape-shifting alien Xavin, or the cyborg spawn of Ultron named Victor Mancha? During a recent interview with Screen Rant, while that isn’t completely out of the question, Schwartz shared that they’re only really focusing on the comic’s debut story arc for now:

“I will say in that regard is that it was really our goal with this to open up that first volume, the first 18 issues that everyone fell in love with open that up and dig into that story and live in that world for as long as possible. So that’s really the world we will be living in for the foreseeable future.”

With Season One containing ten episodes, it’s currently uncertain as to how many of those issues will get covered in the Runaways’ first outing. However, it’s easy to see how later seasons could incorporate new additions to the team like Topher or Xavin. In the case of Victor, Marvel Television would have to slightly alter his backstory due to the events of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, but that’s not exactly an uncommon occurrence in the MCU. In fact, since some say that nothing ever truly disappears on the internet, it’s not a far-fetched notion to think that some sliver of Ultron survived Sokovia and someone (maybe her name is Marianella Mancha) could use that piece to create the mad machine’s “son”. And on the plus side, it would further fuel the notion that it’s all connected, which Marvel Television Head Jeph Loeb always likes to remind us despite the House of Ideas’ movies and shows are largely separate these days.

Of course, until we get to that point, we can only speculate as to where ‘Runaways’ will go after Season One. So which story are you most excited to see come to life eventually? Are there any other teenage Marvel heroes that you hope to see pop up on the show? And do you think that the show will stay faithful to the source material or deviate just as much as the rest of the MCU? Let us know what you think in the comments.

‘Runaways’ starring Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, Virginia Gardner, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, and Allegra Acosta premieres on November 21, 2017, on Hulu.
