kingpin daredevil

Changes are afoot for Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’.  A fan favorite villain is returning after being absent for most of the previous season, while another boss is calling the shots on the set.

Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, will be back after only appearing briefly behind bars in Season Two.  Fans have been hoping that the Kingpin, Daredevil’s most nefarious villain in the comics, would return eventually, with some speculating that he may have been pulling the strings in ‘The Defenders’.  Unfortunately, that was not the case, and Sigourney Weaver’s Alexandra Reid was that show’s big bad.  Of all the Marvel Netflix castings, D’Onofrio’s seems to have struck fans as one of the best, so it will be great to see his larger than life presence on ‘Daredevil’ again.

Meanwhile, Erik Oleson will be taking over as showrunner for Season Three.  He previously worked as an executive producer and writer on ‘The Man In The High Castle‘ and before that, as a co-executive producer on ‘Arrow’, which is somewhat thematically similar to ‘Daredevil’.

Oleson takes over from departed Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez who were co-showrunners for Season Two but left to oversee ‘The Defenders’.  Ultimately, Ramirez performed the job solo, as Petrie left early into pre-production.  Before them, Steven S. DeKnight acted as showrunner for Season One.

Marvel’s TV chief and ‘DD’ executive producer Jeph Loeb announced:

“Vincent is an exceptional actor who returns with the incredible gravitas he brings to Fisk.  We’re very excited how ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ develops through the creative lens and guidance of our new showrunner, Erik Oleson.”

‘Daredevil’ Season Three hasn’t begun production yet and Netflix has not announced a planned release date.  Also on the way are second seasons for ‘Jessica Jones’, ‘Luke Cage’ and ‘Iron Fist’.  There is also the possibility of a second helping of ‘The Defenders’ although that hasn’t been officially announced.

Are you glad that D’Onofrio is returning?  Are you concerned that there will be a new showrunner?
