nightwing

‘Nightwing’ doesn’t have a release date yet, nor is the script complete, but there has certainly been a lot of buzz about it, with most of the stumping coming from director Chris McKay.  With so much info flying, normally you’d think there’d be some sort of casting notice, but that’s not the case here.  And there’s a very good reason for that.

McKay took to Twitter to update fans on the lack of updates in this regard:

So the reason no one has been cast as Dick Grayson/Nightwing is because the script, which is being penned by Bill Dubuque, isn’t ready, so for the time being, even the director doesn’t know what the role will demand.  McKay has already stated, though that he doesn’t plan on using a lot of green screen or artificial enhancements to replicate Nightwing’s comic book acrobatics.  Whoever gets the role will not only have to be able to act, but has to be nimble and athletic— kind of like Tom Holland, the newest Spider-Man.  In fact, McKay has even said, when discussing ‘Nightwing’, that he wants the action to be so intense that the Motion Picture Academy creates a new category for the Oscars– Best Stunt.

Of course, some  projects work the other way around, with an actor cast first.  That way, the writer and director can tailor the script to his or her strengths.  With the DC movies, Warner Brothers has hired a mix of well-known (Ben Affleck, Will Smith), moderately-known (Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot) and virtually unknown actors (Ray Fisher, Cara Delevigne).  On the one hand, the characters are potentially popular enough to carry their own films without needing a marquee name to sell them.  Then again, it couldn’t hurt.

Hopefully more info surfaces as things develop, but as stated, Warner Brothers hasn’t even scheduled this film for release, so who knows how long we’ll have to wait?

Of course, fans are already concocting their dream castings for the role.  (You can see mine here.)  And Brenton Thwaits will be portraying the character on WB’s ‘Titans’ series next year.  Who would you like to see play Dick Grayson on the big screen?
