We’ve seen a lot of fighting happening in comic movies and it sounds like director Chris McKay is opting for an actor who can physically perform the fight choreography in his ‘Nightwing‘ film. Anyone who has seen Marvel’s ‘Iron Fist’ on Netflix can instantly realize that Marvel’s greatest stumbling block in that series was the inability of the leading actor to perform martial arts, but that won’t be the case for this installment in the DCEU.

Dick Grayson is known as one of the most athletic heroes in DC and in some cases even surpasses his mentor, Batman. How will this be showcased in the film? Well, it sounds like the actor who lands the role is going to have a very grueling regiment of work in front of him. McKay states that he’ll be looking for “full commitment” from the actor not only being in the right shape but also be able to not rely on a stuntman for each and every fight scene.

There might be a few changes as to how the character is portrayed according to McKay but mainly because we won’t have years of watching Grayson evolve from kid to Robin to Nightwing:

“The story of Dick Grayson, becoming Robin, then becoming Nightwing played out for us, the audience, in the comics in REAL TIME. It wasn’t a flashback. We experienced it. So all of Robin/Nightwing’s successes and failures we were along for the ride. And people that underestimated Robin or dismissed him perhaps had their opinions changed as we watched him “grow up” right in front of us. His relationships, his conflicts with Batman et al felt real to me because he was the window character with which we experienced Gotham City.”

I suspect that some of these elements will still shine through, but without flashbacks or overt explanations, it might be hard to capture some of this emotional and character development. I’m eager to see how McKay plans on doing just that.

Are you happy to hear that McKay wants an actor who will be able to naturally follow through in not just acting and voice but the physical side of ‘Nightwing’ as well? Do you have any thoughts of a current actor who could pull this off? Share your thoughts below!
