We had previously heard that Max Landis had the blessing of his father John Landis to remake ‘An American Werewolf in London‘ though that no longer seems to be the case. Fans of the original (which John wrote and directed) haven’t been sold on a remake even needing to be made with how well the movie has stood the test of time and now it sounds like Max’s father might have been in that camp all along.
According to John:
“Truthfully, I’ve not seen his script. I advised him not to do it. I think he’s putting himself in a bad position. My son is brilliant, he really is, and he wants to do it. So what am I going to say? No? I know it won’t be as bad as An American Werewolf In Paris, which was s**t. So, I don’t know. He’s a great writer.”
Early reports had John completely behind the project, though it might be just that he is behind whatever his son is working on. To be totally honest, Max probably will put out something that is at least more enjoyable to watch then ‘American Werewolf in Paris’ but will it be enough to bring fans of the original or a new generation of moviegoers to the box office is the big question.
Clearly, ‘It’ has confirmed that audiences are willing to take a new look at older works, though a miniseries to big budget big screen adaptation isn’t exactly what is being proposed here. One can just hope that the remake doesn’t end up getting into Universal’s “Dark Universe” if ‘review The Mummy‘ was any indication.
