spider-man

Disney XD’s ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ just debuted this weekend and in case you missed it, you can now watch the first episode online.  The cartoon isn’t a direct adaptation of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, but like the film, this is a back-to-basics approach which sees Peter Parker (voiced by Robbie Daymond) back in high school, exactly two weeks after he got bitten by the infamous radioactive spider.  In fact, here is the episode’s description:

Peter is accepted into Horizon High: a school for geniuses, where his best friend Harry Osborn was just suspended. Peter makes his debut as Spider-Man and must battle the Vulture.

As you can see, while the show isn’t directly based on ‘Homecoming,’ the creators are still hoping to appeal to those that just saw it and are drawn to this new cartoon thanks to the film.  The Vulture (voiced by Alastair Duncan) is the first foe Peter faces and he even starts out wearing a homemade suit that resembles the one Peter wears in ‘Homecoming’ after Tony Stark takes away his high-tech uniform.

But other than that, the show is steeped in comic lore, both past and present.  Harry Osborn (Max Mittleman) is Peter’s best friend, not Ned Leeds.  Gwen Stacy (Laura Bailey) is also on hand.  Horizon High is adapted from Horizon Labs from the recent Dan Slott run on the comics.  In the comics, Peter Parker sets up a special project which evolves into Horizon University and he places his former Horizon Labs boss Max Modell in charge.  On the cartoon, Max (Fred Tatasciore) is a professor of Peter and his classmates’, which include Anya Corazon (Melanie Minichino) and Miles Morales (Nadji Jeter).  We already know that Spider-Gwen and Miles-as-Spider-Man will appear so it wouldn’t be surprising if Anya becomes Spider-Girl as well.

Peter’s science acumen is emphasized with more technological web-shooters and Peter spouting out large scientific terms.
