The cinematic release of ‘Snowpiercer‘ had mixed reviews but one of the areas which could have used a stronger emphasis was the politics of this new world trapped on a train. Luckily this will be a strong focus in the television series.

The news came from Daveed Diggs (‘Hamilton’) while at the TCA panel for ‘The Mayor.’ Diggs is one of the leading actors on the TNT series which will see both original characters and an expanded plot. The series will still take place entirely on a non-stop train which is the last safe place to live in a post-apocalyptic world which is suffering through a new ice age.

According to Diggs:

“It’s not following the movie exactly. There are a lot of parallels, and it definitely exists in the same world. I play Layton, he lives in the tail so he’s one of the poor people.”

It is interesting to note that most of the references to the television series so far have been about the film and not the graphic novels that it is based off. While the movie showed the rich living a life of pure luxury in the front of the train, there is also a poor population in the back which is barely surviving who are the focus of the story.

Diggs continues that:

“For me at least, as a fan of the film and reading the script, it broadens the world exponentially. That’s one of the advantages of TV, right? You have time. The politics that are sort of hinted at in the film are explored in much more depth. The mechanism of the train is much [more]. The little things that create a world, the specificity. Specifics, it’s why I’m a sci-fi nerd. It’s what drew me to Snowpiercer and it’s what drew me to this, the specifics of community.”

How much into science fiction is Diggs? Well, he’s as much of a fan as we are! Not only has he been nominated for a Hugo Award for his band Clipping due to their album ‘Splendor & Misery’ but:

“Right now I’m reading all N.K. Jemisin. I’m actually flying to Helsinki tomorrow. We’re going to perform at the Hugos which is really exciting. N.K. Jemisin who’s my favorite writer, I’m actually behind on her series. I’m trying to catch up. When we get to hang out with her, I’m trying to be able to nerd out on all of her books.”

Here’s hoping that Josh Friedman (‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’) is going to pen an amazing take on the story for Scott Derrickson (‘Doctor Strange’) to direct!

Are you looking for an expanded version of ‘Snowpiercer’ that can really dig into the story from the graphic novel which was only touched upon in the films? Share your thoughts below!
