MCU

Fans have been seeing the timeline of production and release dates for the current slate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (otherwise known as the MCU) for a while now, so the lineup of films we have coming our way in theaters is no major surprise.  Beyond the fourth Avengers film scheduled to release in early 2019, however, the company has kept its plans intentionally vague.  Now, however, we’ve gotten our first confirmation on “what’s next.”

Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios and go-to guy for a well-spoken but usually-vague quote about the future of the MCU, has an interview with JoBlo recently where he was surprisingly candid about certain aspects of the MCU that usually stay vague.  While he didn’t reveal the real title of ‘Avengers 4’ – even going so far as to call it “untitled Avengers” out loud, haha – he was asked if major characters will be dying in this story arc.  His answer?  One word: “Yes.”

He further opened up about the future of the MCU post-Phase 3.  He revealed to the world that the next film up – essentially kicking off Phase 4 – will be the next Spider-Man standalone film:

“We’re just starting to solidify our plans for ‘[Spider-Man] Homecoming 2’ — we won’t call it that, whatever it is — which is exciting because it’ll be the first MCU movie after ‘untitled Avengers’ in 2019. It’ll be the way ‘Civil War’ informed everything in ‘Homecoming’ – those movies will launch him off into a very new cinematic universe at that point.”

As for who’s going to bite the bullet in ‘Avengers 4?’  Well, Feige was asked specifically about Captain America and Iron Man surviving the fight, and he went back to his well-rehearsed rhetoric of super-vague answers:

“We have another two years of hard work to even finish these movies, and they [the actors] have a lot of hard work to do, so that’s all we’re thinking about, is completing those and delivering on the promise of those. Where it goes beyond that, we’ll see.”

Regardless, though, there it is: Spider-Man will kick off the MCU Phase 4 with a solo film, his second in the new series.  Neato!
