Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman Gal Gadot

Wonder Woman‘ is a bona fide hit, grossing over $100 million domestically and over $200 million globally in its first weekend of release.  For production company Warner Brothers, the clear “next move” for Diana Prince would be to ensure that her solo release gets a sequel (the character will return in this Fall’s ‘Justice League,’ of course).  It’s important to note, however, that a key piece of the success of the new film – its director, Patty Jenkins – has not yet been signed on by Warner Brothers to come back for the next film.

While Jenkins has spoke about a ‘Wonder Woman 2’ at length during the recent press junket, including conversing about which characters from the first film were more likely to return, the deal has not officially been sealed as of yet.  While the contract for star Gal Gadot is firmly in place to keep her version of Wonder Woman appearing in several future DC Extended Universe films, WB executives may not find themselves “behind the eight-ball,” as it were, as it may now appear that they need Jenkins more than she necessarily needs them.

For her part, Jenkins is ready and willing to come back and helm a further film about Diana.  In a recent interview with EW, she had this to say about a potential sequel:

“I’m not a big obligation person when it comes to art. You want to do a movie like this because you believe in it.  Then I had this revelation in the middle of the night: this is your dream cast, you’ve created a character that you love and you can say anything you want in the world right now. I realized that ‘Wonder Woman 2′ [would be] its own great movie. I made ‘Wonder Woman.’ Now I want to make ‘Wonder Woman 2.’ It’s a beautiful story to tell, an important time to tell it and with people that I love.”

Sources say that the studio intends to commence negotiations with Jenkins sooner rather than later, so we may have more news to bring you on this front very soon!

‘Wonder Woman’ is in American theaters now.
