zendaya in spiderman homecoming

As ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming‘ is now only a few months away, fan speculation about what characters are involved, and what actors are playing those characters is growing even more rampant, none more so than with Zendaya, who fans have been trying to figure out since the moment she was cast. The prevailing belief is still that she is playing Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker’s long-time love interest in the comic-books, which as stated many times before, would be a wonderful and refreshing take on the character if indeed Zendaya were playing MJ. However, the folks behind the film and Zendaya herself are insisting, repeatedly, that she is NOT playing MJ, and is instead playing a new character named Michelle, a claim that Zendaya recently reaffirmed.

According to a recent interview with MTV following the MTV Movie and TV Awards, Zendaya said:

“My character is 100 percent Michelle, that’s her name, I promise I’m not lying. She’s definitely a different character. This is a character I can have fun with and just really create what I wanted to make her and the director a lot of really cool ideas about how to make her weird and interesting and cool. She says weird things at the wrong time, but that’s why people like her.”

Of course, if Zendaya and everyone else were flat out lying to the public about who she was playing it would not be that surprising, as we saw similar tactics a few years ago with ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ when everyone figured out Benedict Cumberbatch was playing Khan. You would think that the ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ filmmakers would have learned from the mistake of their predecessors because nothing was gained by the Khan denial. People still knew Cumberbatch was playing the character, and the movie confirmed their theories pretty early on. However, there is a good chance that Zendaya actually is not playing MJ here, as Marvel and Sony are truly trying some different things with this version of Spidey, and that might include introducing some new female characters that are not Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy, both of whom were heavily featured in the last 5 ‘Spider-Man’ movies.
