Marvel’s ‘Runaways’ are running to TV thanks to Hulu. ABC, which is owned by Disney, who also own Marvel has ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ and had ‘Agent Carter’. Their affiliate channel Freeform has ‘Cloak & Dagger’ on the way. Meanwhile, Netflix is set to unleash ‘The Defenders’ which will team up their solo heroes who have already headlined their own shows, ‘Daredevil’, ‘Jessica Jones’, ‘Luke Cage’ and ‘Iron Fist’. Now Hulu is getting in on the Marvel action, ordering this show straight to series.
Gregg Sulkin (‘Faking It’, ‘Pretty Little Liars’) heads up the cast as Chase Stein the son of two mad scientists. He will be joined by Allegra Acosta as Molly Hernandez, Ariela Barer as Gert Yorkes, Rhenzy Feliz as Alex Wilder, Virginia Gardner as Karolina Dean and Lyrica Okano as Nico Minoru. Created by Brian K. Vaughn, ‘Runaways’ was a huge hit and one of the very few completely original concepts to find an audience among comic readers in decades. The comic centered on a group of teens who discover their parents are super villains when they witness them sacrificing a young girl as part of a demonic ceremony. It’s not clear just how closely the show will follow the comics though– there’s no glimpse of Gert’s dinosaur Old Lace in the trailer.
In fact, the only powers demonstrated are Karolina’s and that’s brief. But at the very least, the cast looks (for the nost part) spot on. Gert could be… how do I say this? Bigger? With such a large cast, there could be some physical diversity. They don’t all have to look like Kendall Jenner. And Molly is aged quite a bit, but I’m not complaining since kids on TV shows annoy me.

The show also features ‘Buffy’/’Angel’ alum James Marsters as Chase’s father Victor Stein, Brigid Brannagh as Stacey Yorkes, Ever Carradine as Janet Stein, Brittany Ishibashi as Tina Minoru, Kip Pardue as Frank Dean, Angel Parker as Catherine Wilder, Ryan Sands as Geoffrey Wilder, Kevin Weisman as Dale Yorkes, Annie Wersching as Leslie Dean, Nicole Wolf as Destiny Rodriguez, and James Yaegashi as Robert Minoru.
Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (‘The O.C., ‘Gossip Girl’) serve as showrunners and will both executive produce along with Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.
Now that you’ve gotten a glimpse, what do you think of ‘Runaways’?
