Spawn-Movie-Reboot-Update

Not only is the ‘Spawn‘ movie finally pushing forward but creator Todd McFarlane has weighed in on the rating and a request for the iconic Stan Lee to appear in the film! With the success of ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Logan’ at the box office and the darker nature of the ‘Spawn’ comic, it should surprise no one that McFarlane has managed to successfully push for an R-Rating for the film. In fact, it would be more surprising if it had ended up as PG-13 in today’s box office environment. Things are starting to look up for the film which has had early plot reports sounding like we’d be getting a movie vastly different from the source material.

This announcement came out at Emerald City Comic-Con where McFarlane answered a few questions about the upcoming film from fans. While he stressed that this year’s San Diego Comic-Con is when actual details would come about he was able to share this:

“Listen, I’m going to paint it for you. The movie is going to be a dark R. If here’s PG-13 and here’s Deadpool and here’s Logan, we’re going to be here. It’s going to be dark. It’s going to be nasty.”

It sounds like we should hear quite a bit later this year and that he has the right themes in mind for the film. It also looks like McFarlane wants Stan Lee to appear! Apparently, he listened to Lee when he said that had he cameoed in ‘Batman v Superman,’ the film would have been a success as his cameos have worked for the Marvel movies. This fact was the one area of the film McFarlane was open to sharing ideas as to what the scene would look like:

“Stan Lee is in this building, and it’s a rundown building, and you kick open the door, you catch him by surprise, and he’s dressed in a wife-beater shirt. He hasn’t shaved for four days. He’s got a beer in one hand, and he’s got a big stogie in the other hand.

That’s just the set-up. [Lee] always looks nice in his movies — I just want to do that crusty old curmudgeon. Basically, what his wife sees in the morning when he wakes up. The real Stan Lee. I want you to come into that movie and really act. I want you to just be nasty. It’d be awesome.”

What is the likelihood that this could happen? Well, since the conversation happened at a panel McFarlane was sharing with Lee, the Generalissimo replied:

“I don’t get roles that are too big in the movies because everybody is afraid I’ll get mistaken for Clark Gable.”

Lee has a good point. It might hurt the stars of the film if he were to have more screen time as it might confuse audiences as to who was the focus of the film. Spawn or Stan Lee.

While this is clearly not set in stone as Lee is getting on in age and we don’t know when ‘Spawn’ will begin shooting, it does sound like the kind of cameo we’d love to see. Just as he was a little sleazy in ‘Deadpool’, this could give an entirely new perspective on Lee for fans to get a kick out of.

Are you happy to hear that a new take on ‘Spawn’ is in the works? Wondering what kind of details will be announced at this year’s SDCC? Share your thoughts below!
