Spawn-Movie-Reboot-Update

The first ‘Spawn‘ movie was pretty underwhelming even when it was released in 1997 so now that Todd McFarlane is giving us a new iteration of the film it sounds like we’ll be getting what fans wanted in the first place. This time out, we’re getting a much darker take on the character that sounds as if it will be as gritty and dark as the comics that spawned him, to begin with.

In a recent interview, he spoke about the movie and saying everything from the original should be ignored as the new one is going in a vastly different direction. While we’re not going to have super villains and will be thought of as realistic as possible outside of Spawn himself.

According to McFarlane:

“We’re getting a second movie. And it’s not gonna be a continuation, it’s not gonna be a sequel, it’s not gonna be any of that. Scrap the first movie it was twenty years ago. It’s gonna be a dark, R-rated, scary, badass sort of script that’s tight. And it’s not a nice, polite, PG-13 with ray guns and headquarters…. You’re never going to see a dude in a rubber suit….This is going to be my Jaws shark.”

The one downside is that we might not be seeing Spawn face off at all against Satan or the other denizens of Hell for the fate of his eternal soul. Even so, there was plenty of horrible things going on for him to change in his own brutal manner without the spiritual or supernatural being overly involved.

I’m just wondering if this means we’ll be getting a change to his origins or if they’ll be glossing over that for the most part.

‘Spawn’ is one of the two longest running comics at Image as only it and ‘Savage Dragon’ have been ongoing series since the publisher launched in 1992. From comics to cartoons to toys to the original movie the franchise has proven that it has staying power and hopefully we’ll see it evolve even more with the new film being shipped around.

Are you looking forward to the return of ‘Spawn’? Do you think McFarlane is set to give us something special with what superhero movies can do these days? Share your thoughts below!
