Sophie Turner has confirmed that her iteration of Jean Grey will be back in the new ‘X-Men’ movie, currently dubbed ‘X-Men: Supernova’.

While attending the 2017 BAFTA awards, Turner, who also stars on ‘Game of Thrones’ as Sansa Stark, laid out her shooting schedule for the coming year:

“We’re about to start shooting the next X-Men, we’ve just finished shooting Season 7 of [Game of] Thrones, and I’ve got a couple of movies to do before X-Men starts. And then we go on to Season 8! So I’ve got a busy year lined up.”

Turner debuted as telepath Jean Grey in last summer’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ as a younger version of the character that had been played by Famke Janssen in earlier films.  Turner was joined by younger versions of Cyclops/Scott Summers played by Tye Sheridan, Nightcrawler/Kurt Wagner played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Storm/Ororo Munroe played by Alexandra Shipp, who had previously been portrayed by James Marden, Alan Cumming and Halle Berry, respectively.  Lana Condor was also cast as one of their contemporaries, Jubilee, however her role was much smaller.

In ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, there were teases that future movies would revisit the ‘Dark Phoenix Saga’ which had previously been adapted in ‘X-Men 3: The Last Stand’ one of the poorest received movies in the franchise.  (Turner’s character even took a jab at it in ‘Apocalypse’, “Everyone knows the third one is always the worst.”)  Perhaps the new spin will appease fans who were let down by that lackluster take.  But then again, do we really need to see this story told AGAIN in a film?  Fans have already voiced their displeasure at seeing Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben and Batman’s parents killed onscreen over and over… and over.  Aren’t there other stories to tell?

At any rate, ‘Apocalypse’ set up the introduction of the villain Mr. Sinister, so he will likely be the heavy in ‘Supernova’.

If Turner is returning, it’s very likely that Sheridan, Smit-McPhee and Shipp will as well. Evan Peters, who played Quicksilver/Peter Maximoff will also likely reprise his role, as he has proven to be a breakthrough fan favorite.

But questions arise when it comes to James McAvoy/Professor Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender/Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence/Mystique and Nicholas Hoult/Beast all of whom have completed their contracted three films in the series.  To get them back, Fox will have to renegotiate and that may prove pricey as Lawrence, in particular, has since won an Academy Award and is one of the biggest female box office draws working at the moment.  Fassbender and McAvoy have also carved out fairly successful careers, with McAvoy starring in the recent #1 box office champion ‘Split’ directed by M. Night Shyamalan.

Are you excited that the core ‘X-Men’ will be back in another movie?  Are you intrigued by what they may do with the Dark Phoenix Saga?  Or are you over it and prefer they tell a new story?
