So according to reports from My Entertainment World, despite the terrible critical and audience response to ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘ and the continuing rumors that the main ‘X-Men’ franchise would be taking a break while newcomers like ‘Deadpool 2‘ and ‘The New Mutants‘ would be taking center stage for the time being (not to mention new TV shows like ‘Legion’ and Fox’s ‘X-Men’ show), it seems that production on a new installment of the main ‘X-Men’ franchise is supposedly going to begin shooting this coming June.
Here’s why this does not make a whole lot of sense. Despite the fact that June is only four short months away, there is no news of a director for this film, supposedly called ‘X-Men: Supernova,’ nor was there any news of a script being produced (or even a screenwriter being hired), and no announcement whatsoever about casting, or any cast members of the previous films signing on to return. In fact, ‘Apocalypse’ was supposed to be the swan song for director Bryan Singer, and leads Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender, unless they were somehow talked into returning, which would be no easy feat considering the abuse ‘Apocalypse’ took in the press for its many, many faults.
So unless 20th Century Fox has been exceptionally secretive about all of the production aspects of ‘X-Men: Supernova’ (a title which, to me, does not really fit either, but I digress), I am not really going to be taking this story all that seriously unless we see some actual confirmation from the studio itself, something more than the supposed “synopsis” that was released, which you can read below.
“Gathered together by Professor Charles Xavier to protect a world that fears and hates them, the X-Men had fought many battles, been on adventures that spanned galaxies, grappled enemies of limitless might, but none of this could prepare them for the most shocking struggle they would ever face. One of their own members, Jean Grey, has gained power beyond all comprehension, and that power has corrupted her absolutely! Now they must decide if the life of the woman they cherish is worth the existence of the entire universe!”
