‘Logan’ may be putting the final claw in the casket of this iteration of the cinematic ‘X-Men’ but it looks to be going out with a fury, as title character Logan/Wolverine and his progeny X-23 appear to be really cutting loose in a new set of photos courtesy of Empire.

Loosely based on the comic book story ‘Old Man Logan’, the film is described as a mix between a western and a road picture, with Logan (Hugh Jackman), Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and X-23 (Dafne Keen) on a trip that Jackman describes as:

“It’s a darker version of Little Miss Sunshine, with the three of us on the road.  Slightly more violence!”

Returning director James Mangold embellished:

“The idea of a road picture with Logan, Laura and Xavier in an average car was a driving image for me.  Taking heroes and putting them in normalcy — and nothing makes them more normal than to cram them into a car and make them have to deal with each other — that seemed the ultimate contradiction of what tentpole movies tend to do.”

And of course, making a slash… er, splash is newcomer Keen as the mysterious Laura, known in the comics as X-23.  (Actually, she originated on the ‘X-Men: Evolution’ animated series, first.)  This eleven-year-old posed a bit of a problem for loving father Jackman, who recounted one particularly angry scene between their two character:

“I just yelled, ‘SHUT THE FUCK UP!’ At the end of 40 minutes of this I went up to Maria, Dafne’s mum, and I said, ‘Maria, I’ve got an 11-year-old and I’m just really sorry.’ Maria said, ‘Aw, don’t worry, she just called you a c*nt. In Spanish.’”

The future of the ‘X-Men’ film franchise is a bit cloudy as 20th Century Fox hasn’t really made any announcements about more installments, but after the lackluster performance of ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and the expressed disinterest of returning from director Bryan Singer and stars Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender, it appears that that era of mutant movies is over.  The fact that ‘Logan’ is said to may exist in a different universe from all prior movies adds fuel to that fire.

It sounds like the ‘Wolverine’ movies are going out on a rather intriguing note, with a film unlike all previous films in the series.  Are you curious as to how this will play out?

‘Logan’ directed by James Mangold, starring High Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Doris Morgado, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Richard E. Grant opens on March 4.
