With ‘Kong: Skull Island‘ taking place in the 1970s after the Vietnam War, we’ll be getting a different tone from previous ‘King Kong’ films and the latest details and new concept art show that off. With Napalm being a popular weapon used during the Vietnam War, you can absolutely expect to see plenty of that in use which will be a pretty large change from what has happened in the past. Not only that, but with the world set in the same one that ‘Godzilla’ will eventually awaken in, we have a Kong which will likely be much larger than previous iterations as well.
According to director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (‘The Kings of Summer’) about his pitch for the film:
“The script I first read took place in 1917. But when I started talking to the Legendary [Entertainment] guys, I was thinking, ‘What weird King Kong movie would I want to see?’ So I pitched them the Vietnam War connection, literally thinking they were gonna laugh me out of the room. And to Legendary’s credit, they said, ‘Cool. Let’s figure it out.’ The aesthetics of that time mixed with King Kong makes for an incredible genre mash-up.”
This theme really puts a lot of the characters in better perspective with Corey Hawkins and John C. Reilly’s military experience seeming to be more important to the theme of what we can expect from the film.
Here’s the preview concept art which also stresses the use of napalm. My money is on at least one of the soldiers trying to take Kong down being burned alive by it.
I do wonder how much, if any, setup will be put here for the eventual ‘Godzilla vs. Kong‘ which is scheduled for 2020. It seems with 40+ years taking place between the films that there wouldn’t be too much setup here aside from the potential introduction to a more advanced and warlike humanity that Kong comes across.
