The search for truth continues it seems, as Zendaya continues to deny rumors that she will be playing Peter Parker’s love interest Mary Jane Watson in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ instead insisting she will be playing another character named “Michelle.’ In her own words during an interview with Entertainment Tonight when asked point blank whether she would be playing Mary Jane Watson, Zendaya answered with:

“I’m not Mary Jane unfortunately, but I am in the movie which is exciting…My character’s name is Michelle…It’s incredible, you know? It’s such a huge project to be part of. I mean, who could pick a better thing to be your first movie? Like, I’m speechless. If I could pick a movie, it would be Spider-Man, so I got it.”

Problem is, right after she spoke about her character being named ‘Michelle,’ Zendaya winked over-dramatically at the camera, leaving a lot up for interpretation. She then went on to describe her character, and the description she gave us does not sound that much like Mary Jane, so she is either a great liar, or there’s a chance she might not actually be playing the famous love-interest of Peter Parker:

“My character is not romantic. My character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual and because she’s so smart, she just feels like she doesn’t need to talk to people, like ‘My brain is so far ahead of you that you’re just not really on my level.’ So she comes off very weird. But to me, she is very cool because she’s deep. She’s always thinking about something, always reading. I like that.”

Is she messing with us? Does her contract with Marvel prevent her from revealing who she is playing until Marvel itself releases the news? Or is she truly not playing fan-favorite character Mary Jane Watson? Only time will tell, or maybe, we will know sooner than we think. Rumor has it that there will be a ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ trailer before ‘Rogue One,’ and if we are lucky, maybe that trailer will reveal just who Zendaya is playing in the film. Then again, maybe it will just show a brief shot of her with no context as to who her character might be, letting us continue to wonder just who the hell she is in the movie, which would be exceptionally frustrating.

What do you think? Are you still convinced that Zendaya is playing Mary Jane Watson? Is everything she saying now just a campaign to throw us off the trail? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments section below!
