zendaya KC undercover

Back in March, it was announced that Disney Channel star Zendaya would be joining the cast of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ alongside Tom Holland. Details were very scarce about her character until about two months ago when rumors surfaced that said that she may or may not be playing Mary Jane Watson. The reaction was mixed, with some people blowing it completely out of proportion. But at the end of the day, that news was still a rumor since nothing official had been released about it. And now it seems that there is new evidence that points to the young actress’ role not even being Spidey’s iconic red-headed love interest anyway.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter about her career thus far, Zendaya addressed her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though she doesn’t explicitly share who she will be playing, the nineteen-year-old ‘KC Undercover’ star did react to the “controversy” of her perhaps playing an African-American Mary Jane. But the interesting part came when she was asked if she will be romantically linked to Peter Parker in the upcoming film from Jon Watts:

“No [laughs]. My character is not romantic. My character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual and because she’s so smart, she just feels like she doesn’t need to talk to people, like ‘My brain is so far ahead of you that you’re just not really on my level.’ So she comes off very weird. But to me, she is very cool because she’s deep. She’s always thinking about something, always reading. I like that. And I also like that I don’t really have to do anything for hair and makeup. I just get to walk in and walk out.”

Unless Marvel Studios is planning on making some very big changes to the character, that doesn’t sound like MJ at all. So if Zendaya isn’t playing Miss Watson, then who is she playing? Is this a completely new character created for the MCU? Might this be a reimagined Felicia Hardy? Or could this be one of the many classmates that Peter had at Midtown High that we haven’t gotten to know yet? While we wait for answers, feel free to speculate in the comments below.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Tony Revolori, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei, Martin Starr, Logan Marshall-Green, Donald Glover, Hannibal Buress, Kenneth Choi, Angourie Rice, Tyron Woodley, and Robert Downey Jr. hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
