News has been scarce from the Hyborian Age though we’ve just learned from one of the writers of ‘The Legend of Conan‘ that not only will the movie be a “worthy” sequel to the originals but how it plans to start off. With the ‘Conan the Barbarian’ failing to reboot the franchise in 2011, Universal Studios decided to return to the source material when taking another stab at it. Cinematically, that means bringing Arnold Schwarzenegger back as the aged king.

In fact, returning to the roots of Schwarzenegger is exactly how the new movie will kick off. ‘The Legend of Conan’ will start right where John Milius’ classic 1982 movie ended! Writer Will Beall spilled the beans during the 2016 Television Critics Association press tour:

“It opens there. It opens with this [hand on the chin]. It’s where you have to. It’s the sequel that we were promised and never got.”

While the original film might not have succeeded these days, the swords and sorcery elements could play quite well with a more serious and darker tone. Beall is a huge fan of the original having grown up with it and feels that he and Chris Morgan can bring a proper sequel to the big screen:

“I’m 11 when my father took me to see Conan the Barbarian which you should never take an 11-year-old kid to. It was a life changing thing. It’s an unbelievable movie. It comes back to [director John] Milius, right? There’s nobody better and it’s a real movie. It’s a truthful movie. Chris and I from the very beginning said there’s no reason to do it unless it’s a worthy sequel to Milius’s Conan and I think we’ve got that. I really do.”

While many of the recent attempts at bringing a franchise back to life after so many years have fallen to the wayside we have seen that Schwarzenegger has no problem reprising these roles and this is a genre that is ripe for the taking with a new movie.
