Alien Covenant

Ridley Scott and the cast and crew of ‘Alien: Covenant’ are hard at work filming this latest installment of this long-running franchise.  The new film takes place roughly ten years after ‘Prometheus’, but still some time before ‘Alien’.

Reportedly the new film features the crew of the spaceship Covenant who discover a paradise-like world (which explains the film’s original title ‘Paradise Lost’) whose sole inhabitant appears to be Michael Fassbender‘s android David from ‘Prometheus’.  (No word on what happened to Noomi Rapace‘s Elizabeth Shaw.)  I’m sure this world isn’t as idyllic as it seems in the beginning.  And that David is NOT the sole inhabitant.

Quasi-replacing Rapace, is Katherine Waterston, whose character is currently known only as Daniels.  Daniels leads a new group of alien fodder space explorers, which includes Jussie Smolett, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez, and Billy Crudup.

Though this new image gives NOTHING away about the plot of the movie, it does offer a glimpse at Waterston suited up on board what is presumably the Covenant.  At any rate, check it out below:

At first glance, with her short-cropped hair and tank top, she looks a LOT like Ellen Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver in the original films.  But does she look too much like Ripley?  Is Scott just substituting a younger actor into what is essentially the same role with a different name?

My immediate reaction was why didn’t they do something more original.  Then I remembered that ‘Prometheus’ was nearly completely original and well…

Ahem.  Anyway, ‘Alien: Covenant’ is the first of three new prequels that Scott plans to direct, which lead into his 1979 masterpiece ‘Alien’.  Meanwhile, also at 20th Century Fox, Neill Blomkamp is getting set to helm a sequel which is believed to be set after ‘Aliens’ and ditch the poorly-received ‘Alien 3’ and ‘Alien Resurrection’ entirely, with Ripley, Hicks and Newt still alive.

How do feel about returning to this terror-filled galaxy?  Are you hoping for something more creepy and moody like ‘Alien’ or something more action-packed like ‘Aliens’?

‘Alien: Covenant’ directed by Ridley Scott, starring Michael Fassbender, Billy Crudup, Jussie Smollet, Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Callie Hernandez, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Benjamin Rigby and Alexander England arrives in theaters August 4, 2017.
