With the fallout from the less than stellar reactions to ‘Batman V Superman,’ Warner Bros is now putting their hopes into their next superhero film, ‘Suicide Squad.’ So far, all indications seem to point that ‘Suicide Squad’ will have a better reception than WB’s last superhero film, and with that in mind, rumor has it that the studio is contemplating several spinoffs featuring the Task Force X team members.
We already know that Margot Robbie will be headlining her own Harley Quinn film. So which characters is the WB also considering for a spinoff? According to We Got This Covered:
The Joker is a definite possibility for a spinoff, and Jared [Leto] seems up for it from what I’ve been told. They’re also really hot on Jai Courtney’s character Boomerang right now.
Having a Joker-centric spinoff seems to be a no-brainer as Jared Leto has been getting some great compliments on his take of the legendary villain. The studio seems pretty confident of his portrayal of the Joker as he is said to appear again in Ben Affleck’s ‘Batman’ film (along with Will Smith reprising his role as Deadshot).
It would be interesting to see how Warner Bros plans these spinoffs. Unlike Marvel who tends to give superheroes their own solo film for audiences to get to know them better before incorporating them into the main Avengers team films (with the exception of Black Panther and the Guardians of the Galaxy), Warner Bros is introducing the team first then branching off to focus on each member. One thing ‘Suicide Squad’ does have on its side, however, is that it will be a very different film than the usual dark and gritty DC/Warner Bros superhero movie that they are accustomed to making, and if the success of ‘Deadpool’ has shown, different can be very, very good.
Of course, this is still just a rumor and like everything else, it may all depend on how ‘Suicide Squad‘ does at the box office. But then again, could the purpose of some of the reshoots be to open the door for these spinoffs?
Looks like we’ll have to wait until the film hits theaters to find out! Until then, grab that bag of salt and let us know what you think of Warner Bros making ‘Suicide Squad’ spinoffs and which character is deserving of one.
‘Suicide Squad’ starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Jay Hernandez, and Karen Fukuhara hits US theaters on August 5.
