We all know from the trailers that Magneto, Storm, Angel, and Psylocke are the Four Horsemen in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘ but we’ve just learned that at one point Professor X was meant to be one as well. Before anyone thinks this as improbable, Apocalypse always tries to collect the best of the best to perform his bidding and who would make a better General than the most gifted telepath on the planet?
That was the original plan before Olivia Munn’s Psylocke came on board and it appears that she was a rather late addition to the film. According to producer and writer Simon Kinberg:
“The one person we didn’t know was Psylocke, and the reason why is because originally in the script we sort of…I don’t know why we made this decision, but we knew that Professor X was abducted in the middle of the movie, and we thought that almost counted as a fourth Horseman. And so that’s the way we constructed the original draft of the script. There wasn’t going to be a fourth one. The ‘surprise’ was that Xavier was the fourth Horseman. And then when we were working on the script, Bryan and I at one particular point, pretty late in the process, said, ‘He’s not really a Horseman; he’s not doing anything in the third act of the movie.”
So not using one of the most powerful mutants on the planet meant that they would need to pop someone else into the fold. Going through mutants who had previously been Horsemen, Psylocke stuck out. Having just met with Munn who had turned down being in ‘Deadpool,’ it seemed to be the perfect choice:
“We started talking about who that would be, and just literally looked at the list of different Horsemen over the history of the comics, and Psylocke was the one we thought was the most intriguing. And, ironically, or as fate would have it, I had just met with Olivia Munn about Deadpool, like a week or two before. And Bryan and I were up in Montreal, and I said, ‘You know, Olivia Munn could be an interesting Psylocke,’ so we went on the internet and Googled her images. And one of the first things that popped up was a piece of fan art of Olivia as Psylocke.”
Anyone who loves a strong woman or was a teenage boy during the height of Psylocke’s popularity was clearly glad to see this casting choice as well. So far, the previews show her as an amazing fighter and I’m looking forward to seeing her in action on the big screen. Hopefully, they’ll use her performance to make us all want to see her return in the follow-up which takes place in the 90’s.
