Ex-Machina-Alicia-Vikander

Alicia Vikander is on quite a roll!  She was nominated for two Golden Globes for her roles in ‘Ex Machina’ and ‘The Danish Girl’, the latter of which landed her an Academy Award.  She has also delved into the world of action movies, co-starring in last year’s ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ and the upcoming ‘Jason Bourne’.  Now she’s taking center stage in her own action flick, which may wind up as a franchise, MGM’s reboot of ‘Tomb Raider’.

tomb-raiderVikander will play one of the most popular video game characters of all time, Lara Croft.  Angelina Jolie portrayed Croft in two films, 2001’s ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ and the sequel, 2003’s ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life’.  Considering the track record of video games-turned-movies, these films actually did quite well and helped break down the belief that female-led action movies couldn’t work.

The new film is a reboot that features a young Lara Croft embarking on her first adventure.  Norwegian director Roar Uthaug will make his English-language debut with this film.  The script duties were handled by Evan Daugherty and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.  Graham King is on board as producer.

Just last month, rumors swirled that ‘Star Wars” Daisy Ridley was under consideration for the role.

As for Vikander, in addition to ‘Jason Bourne’ due in theaters in July, she has romantic period piece ‘Tulip Fever’ with Christoph Waltz and Cara Delivigne also due in July, ‘The Light Between Oceans’ with Michael Fassbender and Rachel Weisz in September and she is currently filming ‘Submergence’ with James McAvoy.

‘Tomb Raider’ does not yet have a release date.
