Michael Keaton

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains information which may be considered a SPOILER for ‘Captain America: Civil War’ so proceed with caution.

Fans who wanted to see the classic big screen Batman face off with the new Spider-Man are in for a disappointment.  Michael Keaton was in talks for a role in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, due next summer.  Speculation was that Keaton might be portraying the film’s villain, reportedly The Vulture, but Keaton is reported to have dropped out.  The actor has recently starred in two consecutive Academy Award winners for best Picture, ‘Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)‘ (2015) and ‘Spotlight’ (2016).  Maybe he wants to stick with highbrow fare?

But this film won’t be lacking in star power.  It’s just been confirmed that Robert Downey Jr., a.k.a. Tony Stark/Iron Man will be part of ‘Homecoming’.  As we’ve seen, Spider-Man (or “Underoos”) sides with Team Iron Man in the upcoming ‘Captain America: Civil War‘.

In the original ‘Civil War’ comic book, Spidey played a pivotal role, starting off as Stark’s protegée in the beginning, even going so far as to reveal his secret identity to the world at his behest.  But as the stakes rise, Parker converts to Cap’s side, nearly losing his life when a group of criminals who now know his real name nearly kill him, despite his new fancy Stark-designed armored suit.

Of course… now you know that Iron Man doesn’t die in ‘Civil War’.  Sorry about that.  (If it makes you feel any better, this spoils it for ME as well.)

Obviously, Downey Jr. is playing Iron Man, which means the villain role in ‘Homecoming’ is once again up for grabs.  Who would you like to see take on Tom Holland’s new Spidey?

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ directed by Jon Watts, with a script by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, stars Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, Zandaya, Tom Revolori, Laura Harrier and Michael Keaton Robert Downey Jr. and swings into theaters on July 7, 2017.
