independence day: resurgence

What better way to remember the purpose of  Earth Day than to see our planet get demolished by aliens bent on revenge? Luckily, 20th Century Fox has released the newest trailer for ‘Independence Day: Resurgence‘ which shows that environmental protection sometimes means doing more than reuse, reduce and recycle.

The Earth has once again come under attack and not even landmarks are safe (as Jeff Goldblum’s character David Levinson says, “They like to get the landmarks.”) This full-length trailer unveils a lot that wasn’t seen in the teaser released during the Superbowl. Right off the bat, we learn what happened to Captain Hiller (Will Smith‘s character from the original film) and get quickly caught up with what the world has been up to since the day humanity beat the aliens.

Each of the characters in the film are briefly seen and it goes without saying, that seeing the return of Jeff Goldblum, Bill Putman, Vivica A Fox, and Judd Hirsch was enough to bring out the nostalgia squees. And if you are wondering, yes, we do see Brent Spiner return in the role as Dr. Okun!

One thing that really did stand out in this trailer is that it seemed very CGI heavy so I’m really hoping that ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ can recapture the magic and spirit of the first film without falling into the “Transformers” trap where it relies more on the special effects and destructive action than on the story. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think:

We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Jessie Usher, ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ invades theaters on June 24.
