Joe and Anthony Russo got to play with plenty of Marvel’s toys hen they directed the upcoming ‘Captain America: Civil War’. Not only was this their second go-around with Chris Evans/Captain America, Sebastian Stan/The Winter Soldier, Scarlett Johansson/Black Widow and Anthony Mackie/The Falcon, but they also got to utilize Robert Downey Jr./Iron Man, Jeremy Renner/Hawkeye, Elizabeth Olsen/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany/The Vision and Don Cheadle/War Machine, PLUS relative newcomer Paul Rudd/Ant-Man and brand new additions Chadwick Boseman/Black Panther and Tom Holland/Spider-Man!
But it sounds as if the Russos actually want more! While promoting ‘Civil War’, Anthony Russo offered a tease as to what fans might be able to expect in their next Marvel film, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.
The first name isn’t really a surprise. As Anthony said:
“I’m excited to work with Thor. They’re doing some really interesting stuff with Ragnarok and where he’s gonna be at the beginning of Infinity War is gonna be a very interesting place and I think very profound. I think he’s gonna have a real emotional motivation after that.”
Chris Hemsworth’s Thunder God and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk were intentionally omitted from ‘Civil War’ because they were both so powerful they would have tilted the balance of power too far in this clash of heroes. Instead, the pair’s whereabouts will be revealed in ‘Thor: Ragnarok‘ directed by Taika Waititi, which arrives in 2017.
But it was always assumed that both would resurface in 2018’s ‘Infinity War – Part One’.
But Anthony also hinted that another, less expected character might also appear:
“The [Infinity War] movies are intended to be a culmination of everything that’s happened before in the MCU, so you don’t want to get into spoilers but I’m a big fan of what James Gunn has done. [Joe Russo and I] are both big fans of what James Gunn has done. Star-Lord is a fantastic character and Chris Pratt is an awesome performer so you’d be very excited.”
There had been rumors that eventually the space-faring ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ might one day collide with the Earth-bound ‘Avengers’, and now Russo has seemingly confirmed that. He doesn’t name any of Star-Lord’s companions, but presumably they will factor in as well.
This movie is still two years away, so expect more news as it grows closer.
Are you excited that Star-Lord and the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ might be teaming up with the ‘Avengers’? Or is this getting to be too many characters?
In the meantime, ‘Captain America: Civil War’ directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Daniel Brühl, Emily VanCamp, Martin Freeman, Chadwick Boseman, Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, and William Hurt opens in theaters on May 6, 2016.
