'New Gods

Director Ava DuVernay may have divulged which characters she will showcase in her upcoming DC Comics movie ‘New Gods’ for Warner Brothers.  Late Thursday night, the ‘Wrinkle in Time’ helmer tweeted out an illustration depicting Highfather, Orion, Mister Miracle, Big Barda, Lightray and Metron.

Highfather is the leader of the heroic New Gods of New Genesis.  Mister Miracle, also known as Scott Free, is his biological son and the greatest escape artist in the galaxy.  As part of a treaty, Scott was sent to be raised on Apokolips, home of Darkseid and the evil Gods, while Darkseid’s son, Orion, was raised on New Genesis.  Orion became a leader to the heroic Gods but struggles with the darkness inherent in his nature.  While on Apokolips, Scott met and fell in love with Big Barda, the leader of Darkseid’s elite Female Furies.  Together Scott and Barda escaped Apokolips and have allied themselves with Highfather’s forces, and have also served as superheroes on Earth, as members of the Justice League.  Lightray is Orion’s closest companion, while Metron functions as an aloof observer.

DuVernay announced in March that she was tackling a ‘New Gods’ film for Warner Brothers.  DuVernay had previously expressed that Big Barda was her favorite superhero, so this project seems right up her ally.  DuVernay will be the first African American woman to helm a major comic book movie.  Her film ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ had the largest budget ever for a movie directed by an African American woman.  Unfortunately, that film, for Disney, was plagued by poor reviews and was a disappointment at the box office.  She was previously nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for ’13th’.  She has also been acclaimed for her film ‘Selma’.

It’s unclear when ‘New Gods’ will go into production or be released.  Check back for more developments as they emerge.
