Jennifer Lawrence was a virtual unknown when she took the role of a young Mystique in ‘X-Men: First Class’ but since then, she has blossomed into an Academy Award winner and bankable Hollywood commodity. Yet this summer, she will reprise her role as Mystique in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, her third film in the franchise. And generally speaking, three is the magic number for the number of times a star revisits a franchise. Last year, Lawrence expressed that this would be her final ‘X-Men’ film… but will it be?
With ‘Apocalypse’ arriving in just a few months, Lawrence recently expressed something that seems to be completely the opposite of what she said one year ago:
“I am dying to come back. I love these movies, I love being in them. I love ensemble movies because it’s not on anyone’s shoulders.”
It may be that she’s relieved not to have to carry a major brand the way she has as the focus of ‘The Hunger Games’ movies.
Lawrence had early expressed displeasure at the process it took to make her up as the blue-skinned Mystique, but she insisted on the studio creating a form-fitting bodysuit which cut down the makeup time considerably. And from the trailers that have been released, it appears that she spends most of this movie in her more human form.
Don’t get your hopes up just yet. Producer Simon Kinberg previously announced that ‘Apocalypse’ would “complete the trilogy we began with First Class – to complete the stories of young Raven, young Hank, younger Charles and Erik.”
It’s long been assumed that while perhaps the newest X-Men, including Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler, Lana Condor as Jubilee, Olivia Munn as Psylocke and Ben Hardy as Angel/Achangel may reprise their roles in upcoming movies, most assumed this would be the last hurrah for Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender et. al. (Although can we cross our fingers and hope that Evan Peters returns as Quicksilver?!)
Do you want to see more of Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique? Should the ‘First Class’ be allowed to return in upcoming ‘X-Men’ movies or is it time for a new class?
