One of the best things to come out of the Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm (obviously besides ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’) is Marvel’s amazing line of comics set in a galaxy far, far away. The House of Ideas enlisted some of their most awesome talent to bring us new and exciting stories featuring cinematic icons and beloved characters such as Princess Leia, Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, and more. But these books also serve to expand on the new mythology that wasn’t able to be featured in J.J. Abrams’ acclaimed blockbuster. For instance, a recent Marvel Comics one-shot explored the reason behind C-3PO’s red arm. But now the company will do the same thing with the upcoming ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ later this year.

During the Diamond Comics Retailer Breakfast at C2E2, Marvel Comics Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing David Gabriel revealed that a ‘Rogue One’ comic book series is set to launch in October 2016. The series will include three issues and a one-shot that take place prior to Gareth Edwards’ ‘Star Wars Anthology’ film. However, no information regarding the creative team, plot details, or which characters from the movie would be included in the prequel was shared at the time of the announcement. The best we have so far is the slide:

Marvel Comics Star Wars Rogue One

Though there’s no way to know for sure yet, I could see this prequel to a prequel being similar to  the ‘Shattered Empire’ series released as part of the ‘Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ initiative that saw multiple merchandise and publishing tie-ins to the then-upcoming feature film that simply alluded to the big screen adventure without making direct, borderline spoilery references to what’s to come. Depending on how far ahead of ‘Rogue One’ the comic is set, we may not even see the characters played by Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, and the rest of the cast on the page before they’re brought to life in a theater near you. Of course, anything can happen at this point, so we’ll just have to wait for the official announcement that will inevitably come at some point during this year’s convention season.

What do you think about Marvel Comics publishing a ‘Rogue One’ prequel series ahead of the film’s release this winter? What do you think it will be about? Are there any writers or artists that you’d like to see tackle this project? And will you be adding it to your pull list? Let us know in the comments below.

‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ starring Felicity Jones, Alan Tudyk, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker, Riz Ahmed, and Mads Mikkelsen hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
