The original ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ marketing really didn’t give away much about the film and it seems that the sequel is on the same route. As we’ve seen the first couple of trailers from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2‘ there is a lot go look forward to in the movie though not many could actually say what it is about. The pacing and reveals that way have been intentional as director James Gunn has shared in a recent interview.
Gunn knew that everyone would be watching every on-screen moment for clues as to what was to come as:
“With Guardians, people really go through every single little shot and try to figure out what the movie’s about. And there’s a lot of mysteries in Guardians 2.”
In fact, Gunn has worked with Marvel Studios on exactly how much should be shown in each trailer and what they would even share before the movie ended up being released:
“We were talking about how much to give away — and we’re not going to give away very much… With Guardians, it’s such an emotional and physical journey, going to all these different places. It’s like, ‘God, do I really want to show this planet we go to in the middle of the movie? … Those are always hard choices to make.”
Marvel Studios has become notorious by going with the trend of releasing more footage, trailers, teasers, clips, and featurettes as other studios have been doing so one will hope that they are going to follow Gunn’s lead and be careful on what is released and leave us this air of mystery. I truly hope that we’ll all be able to go in and get out of the movie with the same sense of awe and entertainment as the first was able to deliver without studios giving away major plot points ahead of time.
