Wonder-Woman-Gal-Gadot

It’s been common knowledge pretty much since filming on ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ began that director Zack Snyder was basing a lot of the elements of this Batman, played by Ben Affleck, on the grizzled, battle-weary version from Frank Miller’s 1986 comic miniseries ‘The Dark Knight Returns’.  But if you thought HE was old and weary, he’s got nothing on the film version of Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot!

It has just been released via ‘Empire’ magazine that the new film version of Wonder Woman is over 5000 years old!  And she, like Batman, has hung up the mantle of hero.  But certain events will force her to emerge from this retirement.

What drove this crusader to give up the fight against evil?  Apparently, the ones she was trying to protect.  As Gadot herself explains:

“Because she’s seen it all, she has seen what humans can do, so it was very hard for her to come back and fight.”

This mirrors some lines of dialogue from the not-quite-trailer for ‘Wonder Woman’ that aired as part of The CW’s ‘Dawn of the Justice League’ special, but in that footage, it seemed like it was Diana that was arguing the case for humanity.  But it’s not surprising, especially since at least part of the film is set during the brutal time of World War I, that something soured her on humanity.

Gador shared some additional insights into her character and confirmed that she indeed uses two identities– something the comic book version hasn’t always done.

“They have the same attitude. Although when she is Diana she tries to blend in, she is not too outgoing. I don’t want people to think she is perfect. She can be naughty.”

Naughty?  Wonder Woman?  That would be something.  One issue that some folks have with her character is that she is often depicted as being a paragon without flaws.  Could this add some depth and relatability to the character?

Executive producer Deborah Snyder added:

“Her sexuality is part of her power, but she is also a feminist icon. Gender has been a hot topic, so it is very timely to bring her back. The way we have approached it, especially in the stand alone movie, that is definitely there. Looking back and doing an origin story – and it is a period piece – see the role of women through history. There is a great source of humor in that now. It is so unbelievable you can’t even fathom it. You are still making a statement, but having some fun with it.”

‘Batman V Superman’ looks like a lot of things, but “fun” isn’t necessarily the first description that comes to mind.  But in just the tiny bit of footage released from ‘Wonder Woman’, that film already looks to be less dark and gritty and those statements seem to reinforce that.

What do you think of an old and weary BUT naughty and sexy Wonder Woman?  Can it all work for one character?  In one and a half movies?  Maybe she should change her name from Wonder Woman to Every Woman…
