Mads Mikkelsen’s fan favorite series ‘Hannibal‘ may have been axed by NBC, but don’t worry. The suave Danish actor isn’t going to be unemployed for long. He is currently in early talks to join Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’, which is due on November 4, 2016. If he winds up joining the production, he will be appearing alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the title hero along with Chiwetel Ejiofor (Baron Karl Mordo) and Tilda Swinton (The Ancient One) and possibly Rachel McAdams in an undisclosed role.
Mikkelsen was previously in talks to play Malekith the Accursed, the main villain in ‘Thor: The Dark World’ but ultimately director Alan Taylor went in another direction with Christopher Eccleston in the role.
Nothing has been confirmed about what role Mikkelsen might play, but it is rumored that it would be a villain, which certainly falls in familiar territory for the former Hannibal Lecter. Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo is also a villain, but it has already been stated that he isn’t THE villain of the film, so it’s entirely possible that Mikkelsen will be embodying the Big Bad of ‘Doctor Strange’.
The most obvious choice is Dormammu, who is considered the Sorcerer Supreme’s archenemy. It is known that dimensional travel will play a huge part in the movie and Dormammu rules over just such a bizarre magical realm.
His striking appearance, with his flame-engulfed head would look incredible onscreen, but from an actor’s standpoint, the idea of being nearly unrecognizable visually may not seem very appealing.
Another good possibility is Nightmare, the supernatural ruler of Marvel’s dream world. Once again, this is another magical dimension that could prove intriguing onscreen and unlike Dormammu, Nightmare is distinctly humanoid in appearance. Sure there’d be some makeup work to give him his chalky white complexion, but at least an actor would be more recognizable.
Nightmare also has formidable magical abilities, which he uses to… well, nightmarish ends.
Or maybe Marvel and director Scott Derrickson may be going REALLY bad, like the ultimate Big Bad, the Devil himself. Or at least Marvel’s Code approved version, Mephisto. The Dark Lord is possibly the most powerful force of black magic in the Marvel Universe… would Doctor Strange be enough to stand against such a threat?
In the meantime, Mikkelsen will be changing pace, playing an unnamed good guy in ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ which is is due in 2016.
What role do you think Mikkelsen should play in ‘Doctor Strange’? More info as things develop.
