To say that ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘ is going to be an exciting new ride is an understatement and now director Gareth Edwards has shared more details and images from the film. In just under two months we’ll be able to see it on the big screen but for the time being, we only have what the filmmakers share with us on the true story of how the plans for the Death Star were stolen. With this being the first non-trilogy film set in the universe there are high expectations and being a heist film set in a galaxy far far away makes it has a unique flavor to deliver us as well.
We already know that in the end of the film that these heroes will steal the plans of the Death Star so instead of working towards the end Edwards had to bring the film to life asking how this plan was put into motion:
“The thing every [filmmaker] typically struggles with is ‘How does it end?’ But we knew how our film was going to end. Our problem became ‘How do we reverse engineer from that and know where to start?’ You’ve got a finite number of options and you go through them all like a puzzle to find the one that’s going to lead to the strongest result.”
Much like Luke having to be raised by others, we see Jyn Erso following the same path. Only, her destination isn’t going to be quite the same as Skywalkers:
“Events take place that just shatter her life and send her off to basically be raised as a soldier in the midst of a war. She ends up not the person she was supposed to be. Even though we’re not telling the story of Luke Skywalker, it was important to me that we capture the same themes and emotion. But the film doesn’t unfold how you think. It’s not the same path as Star Wars.”
While I’m in the camp that ‘Star Force: The Force Awakens’ hit the right tones by emulating its predecessors to give us the continuation of the story, this is one that I want to follow its own path and it sounds like Edwards has done just that.
