When it was announced that the follow up to ‘Man of Steel’ would include Wonder Woman, Cyborg and other DC super heroes, most notably Batman played by Ben Affleck, people started to think that Superman and the actor that plays him, Henry Cavill, were getting shafted.  If this was a sequel to ‘Man of Steel’, why wasn’t this movie simply about Superman?  Well, the answer is that this is NOT the sequel to ‘Man of Steel’ but rather a completely separate team-up movie and Cavill’s Superman would be getting a stand-alone sequel all to himself.

Now comes a surprising rumor that the second movie will be helmed not by Zack Snyder, who directed the first film as well as ‘Batman V Superman’ and the two upcoming ‘Justice League’ movies, but George Miller.  This won’t be Miller’s first shot at guiding the adventures of the Last Son of Krypton.  Miller was famously attached to direct an earlier ‘Justice League’ movie in 2007, subtitled ‘Mortal’ which fell apart just before filming was slated to begin in Australia.  In that film, D.J. Cotrona was signed to play Superman.

Henry Cavill In the first ‘Man of Steel’

This past summer, Miller returned to the film series on which he built his reputation with ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’.  Though the film wasn’t a massive hit, it did well enough and really clicked with fans who did see it.  That film’s success plus his previous attachment to a DC project appear to have put him in the running to return to that fold.

John Schnepp, who directed a documentary about the aborted project let slip that Miller was “doing” the second ‘Man of Steel’ while appearing on the Popcorn Talk podcast, but it was just a random statement, although he said it with certainty.

As of right now however, ‘Man of Steel 2′ isn’t on Warner Brothers’ release schedule of DC movies, although it has been mentioned several times.

Unlike Marvel which is limited to two films per year, Warner Brothers isn’t limited, although they are parsing their DC movies out in a similar fashion.  2016 will see ‘Batman V Superman’ and ‘Suicide Squad’, while ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Justice League Part 1’ are due in 2017.  But 2018 will see the release of three movies, ‘The Flash’, ‘Aquaman’ and ‘The Batman’ directed by and starring Ben Affleck.

For now, WB only has two movies slotted for 2019, ‘Shazam’ and ‘Justice League Part 2’, but if they’re aiming for three in 2018, they may squeeze in one more, especially if ‘Shazam’ is a stand-alone movie, not connected to ‘Justice League’.  But since Cavill will be needed to shoot ‘Justice League Part 2’, that may prevent him from also filming ‘Man of Steel 2’ for the same year.

More news as it surfaces, but the George Miller news is strictly a rumor at this point.

What do you think?  Would Miller make a good fit for a second ‘Man of Steel’?  What would you like to see in a sequel?
