We all knew that Stan Lee was going to pop up in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.‘ After all, he’s in pretty much every movie that has to do with Marvel. However, we learned back in September that the Generalissimo originally had a different cameo planned for James Gunn’s surprise hit. The director went into detail at DragonCon about the cameo that was shot that saw the comic book legend appear in one of the cubes in the Collector’s museum and flip off Groot. However, it looks like there was yet another version of this scene that the filmmaker had planned which ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor.

During his appearance on an episode of ‘The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith,’ Gunn was asked about Stan Lee being “liberated” from the Collector’s museum in the original cameo. However, the director corrected Goldsmith and set the record straight on this omitted scene:

“He wasn’t going to be liberated. We were going to murder Stan Lee. Yeah, we killed him. That’s one of the main reasons why it’s not in the movie.

We actually did two different versions. We did one where Stan Lee was just sitting there, and one where he looked at Groot and just gave him the finger. But it wasn’t really Stan Lee, because we were in England, and Stan’s an older gentleman, and he couldn’t make the trip. So we did it with a double. And then we were going to digitally replace his head with Stan’s head, which we were going to shoot later.

But we weren’t sure if we should add it. Kevin thought it was a little bit too jokey. And then also we very clearly saw Stan Lee’s box exploding, when the thing explodes. And I said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if Stan Lee’s…these are the kind of ideas that I would come up with and Marvel would say I think that’s Super James Gunn…but Stan Lee’s head is rolling into frame.’ And anyway, so we didn’t do that.”

Wow. I mean, based on his previous work, it’s totally a James Gunn move to make Stan Lee’s head literally roll, but I’m glad that they didn’t actually go in that direction. I wish that the cameo still saw him in the museum without flipping off Groot, but that’s just me. Either way, we didn’t get that version of The Man’s appearance in the film and it turned out just fine, even exceeding almost all expectations.

What did you think about Stan Lee’s cameo in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’? Would you have preferred the alternate scene that saw him flipping off Groot or the alternate alternate that saw Stan’s head roll? Let us know in the comments below.
