Brienne of Tarth has traded in one suit of armor for another!  ‘Game of Thrones’ star Gwendoline Christie is suiting up in another chunky metal getup for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ the seventh film in the famous space epic, in which she plays Captain Phasma, a pilot of the First Order, the remnants of the once all-powerful galactic Empire.  Phasma was spotted in the early trailers chasing the Millennium Falcon in her TIE Fighter.

Director J.J. Abrams had high praise for Christie who was forced to do most of her acting from the inside of her chunky Stormtrooper helmet, stating:

“I can only say that Gwendoline Christie is my favorite. She just killed it. You think, “Well, what? she’s wearing a costume.” But it’s a lot to wear and to have a performance when you’re wearing that requires a different kind of skill set and an additional talent, and she’s got it. It’s an incredible thing to work with her. I am glad that a character has been designed that is visually as stunning as that is, because she deserves it and the fans do to. When I first saw that design my mind was blown because it looked so undeniable.”

Very little else is known about Captain Phasma and how she fits into the story… well, actually not much is known at about the story at all.  But the Vanity Fair cover story on ‘The Force Awakens’ had this to say:

“But should we really assume that Christie’s Phasma is pure evil? In a franchise where a rakish smuggler can get the princess, a Sith Lord can be redeemed, and a Stormtrooper can be a potential hero, anything can happen.”

Will Phasma wind up as a star-crossed antihero?  We’ll have to wait and see, as there are still two more movies in this series left, not counting Anthologies.

But for the time being, Disney positioned Phasma’s armor for display during D23, so you can at least get a good view of the character’s look before it stalks across the big screen:

Will Captain Phasma be like a new Darth Vader?  What do you think about the character’s appearance?  Comment below!
