Indonesian martial artist Joe Taslim, who has appeared in ‘Fast & Furious 6’ and ‘The Raid: Redemption’ will be beaming up to ‘Star Trek Beyond,’ currently filming in Vancouver.  The exact nature of Taslim’s exact part is being kept under wraps, but he is said to be playing a “key role” opposite Idris Elba’s character– also a mystery role, although it is known that it will be as the film’s Big Bad.  That either means Taslim is a fellow bad guy (or henchman) or a good guy opposing him.

Taslim played the criminal Jah in ‘Fast & Furious 6’ which was also directed by Justin Lin, who is helming ‘Star Trek Beyond.’

Lin takes over for J.J. Abrams, who directed the first two ‘Star Trek’ reboots, but who departed to take over ‘Star Wars’ for Disney.  The script for the new movie was written by cast member Simon Pegg (Scotty) and Doug Jung.  The main cast of the first two movies is returning; Pegg, Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Mr. Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Anton Yelchin (Chekov), Karl Urban (Dr. “Bones” McCoy) and John Cho (Sulu).  They are joined by Sophia Boutella in– you guessed it– a mystery role.

‘Star Trek Beyond’ is set to beam down into theaters on July 8, 2016 in time to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the original ‘Star Trek’ TV series.

Are you excited by this casting?  Do you think ‘Star Trek’ needed more Judo?
