The mission is likely to continue for at least one more outing, for the two stars of ‘Star Trek.’  Both Chris Pine (Captain James T. Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Mr. Spock) have been offered options for a fourth installment of the film series which is a reboot of the classic 60s TV series.  2009’s ‘Star Trek’ grabbed modern audiences with its whit and emphasis on action.  2013’s sequel ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ made even more at the box office, but audiences weren’t as enamored of this installment, which was apparently too much of an homage to ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,’ the 1982 film starring the cast of the original TV show that is widely considered the best big screen ‘Trek’ chapter.  (Similar criticisms were lodged against ‘Superman Returns’ which was modeled on the 80s ‘Superman II.’)

The third film, possibly titled ‘Star Trek Beyond’ has just begun production, with Justin Lin directing.  This film has had a rough journey to this point, having lost two directors– J.J. Abrams, who left to direct ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and Roberto Orci, who couldn’t see eye-to-eye with Paramount over the tone of the new movie.  But the course appears to be set.

The new movie is due next year, in celebration of ‘Star Trek’s’ 50th Anniversary, but the studio isn’t ready to stop there.  They are already planning a fourth film and seem eager to lock in the two most important members of this neo cast.  But ‘Trek’ is an ensemble and Kirk and Spock couldn’t function with out Uhura (Zoe Saldana), McCoy (Karl Urban), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Chekov (Anton Yelchin) and Sulu (John Cho).  While these actors haven’t yet been offered options on the fourth movie, it should only be a matter of time.

Are you excited at the prospect of a fourth film?  How many films do you think they can get out of this generation of crew members?  Sound off below!

The third ‘Star Trek’ is slated to hit theaters on July 8, 2016.
