With no recent word on their progress, writer and director Chris Columbus has shared an update on where the ‘Gremlins‘ reboot and ‘Goonies‘ sequel currently stand. We’ve known that both films have been in the works for quite some time but not much progress has appeared to be made as they both suffered delays. While on the press circuit for ‘Pixels,’ Columbus was asked on how the next iteration of both of his classic films were doing. As the process is going slow it seems we don’t have to really get too worried about how these beloved 80’s movies are going to be butchered quite yet.

How butchered? Well the first words out of Columbus on the subject should have anyone worried as:

“The stuff that I’m involved with — the Gremlins and Goonies reboots, for instance — they would do that without me. So, I’m staying involved just so I can be protective and actually protect what people love about those movies so it doesn’t go off track.”

Without him there we probably would have had sequels to both out already that were set to cash in and flop. Wait, did I say ‘Goonies’ sequel? It sounds as if things might be changing to the reboot end of the spectrum after all. Yes ladies and gentlemen the only potential saving grace of more ‘Goonies’ is gone as it sounds like we’re falling squarely into yet another Hollywood reboot.

“You don’t want to disappoint the fans by just doing a schlocky movie. You want to do a real legitimate movie. It’s not going to be a sequel. In the Amblin spirit of Goonies, that’s what has to be.”

With a new writer on board for ‘Gremlins,’ one might think it is a bad sign but Columbus actually seemed a little excited about it:

“And then suddenly all these years later, we were approached with an idea that really sounded like an interesting version. It’s not a remake of the movie at all. It’s a, it’s just a reinvention of it.”

So a very different take instead of a retelling of the same story is what sounds to be the plan here. While I’ve never been thrilled with a reboot of ‘Gremlins’ happening, I have to say that the idea of a sequel for ‘Goonies’ was the only thing that had me slightly interested in it and the change to it now being a reboot is having it lose what little magic it may have held for me.
