Fellow fans of Samuel L. Jackson (‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron,”RoboCop‘) I’m happy to tell you that he has officially signed up the remake of ‘The Blob.’

While I’m sure many of us may instantly be worried that this could be heading towards ‘Snakes on a Plane’ territory, it is supposed to have a darker tone to it. This will be the second official remake of the 1958 film as 1988 saw another take of ‘The Blob’ hit the big screens. However, unlike the Rob Zombie film that was in development after ‘Halloween,’ this one is going to be along the lines of a modern science-fiction film along the lines of ‘Jurassic Park.’ The film is being directed by Simon West (‘The Expendables 2,”Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’) and will be produced by Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten who both just worked with Jackson on Stephen King’s ‘Cell’ which is due out later this year.

We’ll be seeing Jackson play a biochemistry professor attempting to thwart the other-worldly predator discovered deep within the earth which should give us a pretty well put together action flick. I mean, looking at West’s past work and the kind of film we’ll often see Jackson in, there is a good chance the action will be on high throughout much of this one.

Previously when West has spoken about the movie he described it as:

“The blob itself will be more sophisticated, more along the lines of Alien and Predator and things like that – much more science-based, the way Jurassic Park made you believe you could bring back dinosaurs with a bit of DNA from a mosquito. This will be much more explained on where the blob comes from and how it works. It’ll be a much more sophisticated creature – because it is a monster movie rather than a horror in that sense.”

I know that I’m usually down on remakes but with the 1988 movie not being great an update to the 1956 film, if the remake was done right it could have a lot of potential. I especially love the movies that West references as his inspiration so it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out on the big screen. I’m sure we’ll be hearing quite a bit more on the casting front and a release date in the near future.

What are your thoughts on the remake of ‘The Blob’? Is this a movie that can benefit from one being done? Are you happy to see Jackson attached to the project? Share your thoughts below!
