When it comes to remakes it is becoming increasingly hard to get behind them but director Simon West (‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’,’Con Air’) has hinted that the tone of ‘The Blob‘ might make it worth checking out.

From its 1958 roots and even the 1972 and 1988 sequels there is a lot that can be done on film today that the original movies couldn’t pull off. It sounds like like West plans on using modern technology to really change the look and feel of the film.

According to West, “With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob.”

Even with the original movies being classics for horror buffs everywhere, we can probably all agree that they haven’t aged well visually. The premise, plot, and acting are all fine but the look? For something that needs to have the look down they just don’t hold up anymore.

So what will the the new take on ‘The Blob’ give us? Will it be something more like a disaster film as ‘Godzilla’ has proven that genre can still be a hit with audiences?

“Yeah, it’s definitely going to be on a much bigger canvas than the originals, which were much more small, niche genre horror movies. My version of The Blob’s going to be more sci-fi.”

I like the idea of more science fiction being used as I love horror themed science fiction films. In fact two of my favorites also get mentioned in his next quote:

“The blob itself will be more sophisticated, more along the lines of Alien and Predator and things like that – much more science-based, the way Jurassic Park made you believe you could bring back dinosaurs with a bit of DNA from a mosquito. This will be much more explained on where the blob comes from and how it works. It’ll be a much more sophisticated creature – because it is a monster movie rather than a horror in that sense.”

Okay, now that sounds promising. However, it also seems like a lot of promises are being made here and I can’t help but remember that this is a reboot. Unlike the 1988 version that tried to make ‘The Blob’ into a science experiment gone wrong, we’re going to be seeing more of an invasion movie here which is just what I’d want it to be.

“This thing’s come from another planet, and also, we don’t know how many there are. It’s fun at the moment – while I’m prepping this other film, The Blob is a bit longer term. I’m having a lot of designing this creature, what its talents are, its attributes, how you can think you’ve defeated it, but you haven’t. It’s fun inventing a creature like that – like the new Alien or the new Predator.”

As I tend to avoid reboots like the plague, I will admit that I’m on the fence on this one. I’m trying to reserve judgement at least until initial footage is released as the concepts he brings up do sound interesting.

What are your thoughts on a science fiction piece of horror for ‘The Blob’ with the tone of ‘Alien‘ and ‘Predator’ in mind? Do you think the concept is a good one or has West bitten off more than he can chew?
