It looks as if Robert A. Heinlein‘s novel ‘Starship Troopers‘ may be getting a new cinematic life on the small screen! While the 1998 release of Paul Verhoeven‘s ‘Starship Troopers’ was a hit among genre fans, the resulting sequels quickly put a blight on the first film. During an interview with HitFix while promoting his new film ‘Goosebumps,’ producer Neal H. Moritz (‘I Am Legend,”The Fast and the Furious’) revealed that a remake or reboot of the franchise could come in the form of a television series.

“We’re developing it. We’ve actually been talking about either doing it as a feature or doing it as a television show, so we’ll see.”

With how successful properly done serialized story telling has become in recent years, television could be just the format we need for a reboot. A major concern, though, is that with many recent reboots it could easily go from being a humor filled satire to just a dark action tale. That being said, unlike ‘Total Recall’ and ‘RoboCop,’ if we’re entering a world where humanity is fighting giant bugs I could enjoy a new telling being extremely dark.

If they are following the initially planned tone of the reboot film then what we’ll be getting is “Less a satire & more an actual adaptation of the Heinlein novel. An Officer & a Gentleman in power armor.” With the right kind of budget, cast, and crew, this could be a smash hit that draws the kind of fandom that ‘Battlestar Galactica’ had created.

Are you so against reboots that the idea of more ‘Starship Troopers’ isn’t doing anything for you or do you think that this is a story that could become a great ongoing series? Share your thoughts below!
