While it initially felt that ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘ was going to just be a sequel to ‘Man of Steel‘ we’ve all been convinced otherwise over time and even Henry Cavill himself agrees with us on this one. It was clear that Warner Brothers was trying to grow a cinematic universe by adding in Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and more but the latest trailer really made it feel like an ensemble movie and the increased casting hinted more at an origin story for the Justice League.

Recently at CinemaCon while promoting ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,’ Cavill was asked if he felt that the story being told was a true sequel to his first Superman movie and what will probably be unsurprising to us all, he said no:

“I wouldn’t call this a Superman sequel. This is Batman vs. Superman, so it’s a separate entity altogether. It’s introducing the Batman character, and expanding upon this universe, which was kicked off by Man of Steel.

Everything could change in the editing room but as it stands, it’s an introduction of the character, and ultimately, the introduction of Justice League.”

Which is fine. Marvel Studios laid building blocks to a bigger joint movie as they went. They just had a different method with more stand alone films to a joint film to stand alone films with crossovers.

Right now there isn’t a right way or wrong way to do it until we see what Warner Brothers and DC have actually put together here.

Cavill was also asked if he had a chance to see any of the finished product for the movie so far. While he has seen a little, there wasn’t enough quite yet for us to get our hopes up on any juicy details.

“I’ve only seen a little bit of ADR stuff, but that’s it, and that wasn’t even in color… I’m hoping to see it some time this year, for a friends and family screening or something. But I really know nothing about what the finished product looks like.”

While that is a shame, the movie is still quite a ways out so that shouldn’t be at all a shock with how much special effects work goes into super hero movies.
