While the rest of the world has been keeping an eye on Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ and the huge marketing campaign behind that cinematic behemoth, other Scott fans (myself included) have been waiting on more for the long-discussed ‘Blade Runner’ sequel.
When we last heard any news on ‘Blade Runner 2’, there was a rumor (now debunked) that Harrison Ford would return to reprise his role as Rick Deckard that he made famous in Scott’s original 1982 cyberpunk classic. Since then, Scott has mentioned several times that the ‘Blade Runner’ sequel is still in the works but there hasn’t been much news… until now.
In a recent interview with The Daily Beast where he discussed ‘Prometheus’ and his love of strong female protagonists. In that interview, the conversation eventually turned towards the ‘Blade Runner’ sequel and when it might happen, to which Scott replied:
“Funny enough, I started my first meetings on the Blade Runner sequel last week. We have a very good take on it. And we’ll definitely be featuring a female protagonist.”
This is good news to all movie-goers since it’s no secret that, other than a few notable exceptions (‘Terminator’ and ‘Alien’), female leads in action and sci-fi movies has been very minimal. Even ‘Avengers’ director Joss Whedon has expressed his interest in bringing more ladies into the genre with ‘Avengers 2’… if he directs it.
