Not too long ago Joss Whedon alleviated fans’ fears that the success of ‘The Avengers’ would mean that he would be going mainstream by writing an open letter to his fans. It looks like he is a man of his convictions as reports say that Whedon is unsure about whether or not he should direct ‘Avengers 2.’

In an interview with L.A. Times Hero Complex, Whedon states that’s he torn about the decision. “You know, I’m very torn,” he explains. “It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool.”

Although Whedon wrote the script for ‘The Avengers’ he still attributes the work as “someone else’s story.” After all, he created the ‘Buffy’ and ‘Firefly’ universe and even though he put his own unique stamp on this movie, when it comes to creative control, it’s still Marvel’s. Unlike most directors who would jump on the chance to stay with a successful franchise, Whedon is seriously weighing his options before making a decision. One thing is certain, though, is that if Whedon does decide to take the helm for the sequel, we may be seeing more female superheroes as he’s stated that he’d like to have more of them in the lead.

Whatever his decision, Whedon is the perfect choice to direct ‘Avengers 2’ as he has this innate ability to bring together a group of misfits and form a formidable force. It worked with Buffy and her ‘Scooby” gang, the team led by vampire with a soul Angel, and with the crew of Serenity.

And speaking of misfit groups, Whedon was asked which of his misfit crew did he favor the most?  “You know, I love all my raggedy children,” he said. “But if I could be anywhere, I’d be on board Serenity.”

The success of ‘The Avengers’ has definitely given Whedon the freedom to choose his projects. If he decides not to return to the Marvel Universe, maybe he can be convinced to return to the Serenity one?  We can only hope!
