We’ve seen our fair share of talented individuals make appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the years, but now that we get a weekly dose of the House of Ideas thanks to the shows on ABC, the floodgates have been opened to include even more additions to the ever-expanding world of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and the rest of the Avengers. J. August Richards, Patton Oswalt, Amy Acker, Ian Hart, Lucy Lawless, and Ron Glass are just a few names that have appeared alongside Clark Gregg’s Agent Phil Coulson and his team as they expanded the MCU, but now another award-winning actress will join the mix for the second half of the second season of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..’

When ‘Agent Carter’ wraps up and we rejoin the present day MCU, we’ll see the likes of Luke Mitchell, Edward James Olmos, and Jamie Alexander in season 2B of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ but they won’t be the only special guests popping up. Marvel.com recently announced that Drea De Matteo would join the cast as a new villain this season. The actress is known for her roles as Angie Bolen on ‘Desperate Housewives,’ Wendy Case on ‘Sons of Anarchy,’ and Adriana La Cerva on ‘The Sopranos,’ but now she’ll take on the character of Karla Faye Gideon, “a Gifted woman with a grudge to bear against S.H.I.E.L.D. who joins forces with Skye’s father, Cal.” With the word “gifted” highlighted in that sentence, one might assume that De Matteo will be playing an Inhuman, however, executive producer Jeph Loeb doesn’t give anything away while talking about the newest addition to the cast:

“We’re thrilled to have Drea join us as yet another great villain to challenge our cast. We relished the opportunity to work with her in such a menacing role.”

Though it looks like De Matteo will be connected to Kyle MacLachlan’s Calvin Zabo and possibly Chloe Bennet’s Skye/Daisy Johnson, it’s also worth noting that Karla Faye Gideon has a history in the comics with Matt Murdock AKA the Man Without Fear known as Daredevil AKA the star of Marvel Studios’ first original series on Netflix. It’s very possible that the character only shares a name with a character from Marvel mythology and has a completely different backstory, which is something that has been known to happen when some things make the transition from the comic shop to the multiplex, but it would be so interesting to see these two landmark shows connected in this way.

What do you think about Drea De Matteo joining the cast of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’? Do you think that her version of Karla Faye Gideon will have any connections to Charlie Cox’s Daredevil? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
